Making of The Music In Me (2007 RPM Challenge)

THE MUSIC IN ME

Back in '07 I signed up for the RPM Challenge to write and publish 10 NEW songs in the 28 days of February. In this bonus episode I want to share some of that deadline-induced creative process followed by the end RESULT. All the accompanying tracks were sequenced in the Yamaha Motif ES.

(00:00) "Will I get past my excuses not to revisit the muses" first rough idea on nylon guitar, more ideas on accompaniment track and after all that cacophony (1:34) EXCUSES (4:16) unfinished crossword puzzle gave the idea for second song (5:01) FLOPPER (8:27) trying to start and finish 10 songs in a cold house in February can feel a bit like the movie Groundhog Day (9:07) STUCK IN G-A (yes, the chords and the phat/peachy state). Obviously, the next song had to be about getting OUT of that floppery rut, preferably to warmer environs if only trippymental, so (12:26) PACK UP A SUITCASE (15:51) for Isabella's 4th birthday in Jan 9 we went to Disney's m-i-c-k-e-y-m-o-u-SA in Orlando which then inspired (16:44) EYES OF A CHILD (19:43) SUMMER DREAMS in the midst of winter, this was Amy's song that year for her birthday on the 10th (23:54) warming up watching PBS Kids with my dogter Bailey the morning after the birthday party for Amy's aunt, (26:55) SUZANNE (30:58) Feb 2nd, 1st piano musings to tackle the RPM challenge set before me, with ideas for what would turn out to be #8 (31:23) HEART OF STONE; glad to report I'm still working on my pronunciation of "i-ron" (36:16) SERENDIPITY is Amy's favorite word and this song was a happy accident so it's a fitting description of the whole endeavor (39:33) THE MUSIC IN ME, tagged by some of the ideas that led to it.

(00:00) Your Kiss of Life has made me whole just like water down my thirsty soul, your love's the soothing balm that truly makes me whole. (6:22) Finding The Way Back Home after switching Windows XP for Windshield Vistas on a big rig, whiny rant happily interrupted at (8:03) by Everything I Ever Needed which was finished Sept. 13 after Family Dollar delivery in Morehead KY (10:15) The real reason I cried while driving through heavy rain in hilly Pikeville KY, listening to that funny guy and all around classy horndog Alec Baldwin interviewing Billy Joel on Here's The Thing (12:25) Someone Tell Me What's This Song About (seriously, I have no clue!) sumn'bout philosophy, life and eternal loops (14:57) Just Got Two Hats From Barcelona, thank you JorgeyTika les dedico otra vez su canción del 2010 (16:33) Mi Hogar está junto a ti, porque tú eres mi destino final (21:14) Some randomTVmusings after the Emmy's on Homeland blowback (stopimperialism.com), Sofía Vergara, Claire Danes, Damien Lewis, Mandy Patinkin and Criminal Minds' haughty Dr. Reid (26:57) JBsTVmusing on Revenge's new second season (29:40) Some advEyeZ for Emily/Amanda to keep her eyes on the goal and her ice in the freezer for that delicious cold dish that she has up her sleeve. This track made me think of Judge John Hodgman which is another podcast I thoroughly enjoy.

My 40th Birthday/LABOR Day surprise party

Amy pulled it off, her surprise party for me was a total success and I was none the wiser as I entered the Carreño residence (1:18, "Another Day"). A good time was had by all and the memories will always stay with me. Thank you pastor Tony (DocTMoore.com) for your beautiful prayer for me, I wish it had been recorded! "The Happy Birthday Song for the Jazzically Challenged" (3:56) My mamita sang over the phone from Bogotá her trademark himnito Feliz Cumpleaños (5:39). From the bathroom stall in Ohio I got the idea for the video of the next song (7:47), "Better Be Ready" (9:26) here are the lyrics:

Are you ready? Make sure you're ready...What will you do if your guitar is out of tune, when you're required to perform out of the blue? How would you like your chances, if you took no changes, what if you prepared and made sure you were ready, you BETTER BE READY, don't waste another minute 'cause time is running out, don't leave it to chance, every second counts, don't just let it pass you by.

What will you do if you get fired up too soon, what if it causes you to miss an opportunity to make a good impression, so don't get too excited, if you can't take the heat don't set your hair on fire...so what will you do when your guitar is out of tune, will if be good enough to improvise the blues? You think that's gonna take you places, well what if they just send you packing, right back home where you belong 'cause you're not ready to perform so get ready, you BETTER BE READY, 'cause your curtain call is coming, to deliver on your promise...So what will you do before the next time someone calls you out of the blue to perform? Will you be ready for the challenge put before you, or will you choke/panic and set your hair on fire?

(13:05) Thank yous (17:10) From Wakefield, Ohio I introduce my last song "Generations"

The Dance of Life...Have you ever had the feeling of a dance beneath your steps, like you're stainding on the shoulders of your people? //Generations gone before me, they come before me in the dance of life//. So don't miss your turn in the dance; you'll never know how far you'll go until you see where you come from, because life is a dance where you're learning your part everyday as your history unfolds in your generation so... don't miss your turn, you'll never know how far you'll go in the dance of life, so make it count!

Mi Hermosa AmyGA, the kite?

Blaming Isaac for my headaches caused by staying up late working on podcast, duped into a "Labor Day Bash" only to get blindsided with a surprise birthday party, the kite cliffhanger and missing my travel companion alias "La mejor cometa del mundo."

JB Lopez songs featured on this episode:

  • "No More Excuses" (1:34) from the RPM Challenge 2007 album "The Music In Me," available for free at jblopez2020.blogspot.com
  • "Somewhere to Go" (7:01) and more serendipity: After finishing this mp3 at the Lowes in Pascagoula MS I was sent to pick up a load at another Lowes, this time in Gulf Breeze, FL which matches perfectly this ditty about wishing to go to the beach and feel the breeze on my face...which I am doing right now!
  • "Unsolved Kite Mystery" (Aug 28 2012 DiaryDitty, 13:26)
  • "Mi Hermosa Amiga" (18:39) Written in 1993, when I met My Beloved.
